Nice to Saint Tropez by road in July. Here are the numbers, then decide for yourself. 110 km. Out took three hours twenty leaving Nice at half eight this morning. Back was two forty. The last 15 km from Sainte Maxime is one lane each way and between eleven and two it does not move. This was a Tuesday. So a private car for the day means about six hours of a twelve hour day spent either driving or queuing to get somewhere. The boat from Nice is two and a half hours each way and it costs less. It also puts you on the quay at the same minute as everybody else and it leaves when it leaves, so you get five hours and two of them go on the same three streets. What made the car worth it for us was the stops. Port Grimaud on the way in. Ramatuelle at six on the way back, when the light drops and the coaches have gone. If all you want is the port and the boats, take the boat and keep the 300 EUR for dinner.
