The old harbour is on the east side of the walls, so the first light comes in low across the water and sits on that stone while the lanes behind it are still blue. You get about 25 minutes of it. By half six it has gone white and it is over. What surprised me was the road up Srd. From the viewpoints at that hour the town looks small and the sea behind it is empty. Same spot at eleven and there are four ships out in the roads and the water looks like a car park. The cable car does not run at sunrise. If you want the height early you need a car and somebody to drive it, and that is the only reason I paid for a driver instead of walking up in the dark. 19 degrees at five in the morning, 28 by lunch. I carried two bodies up there and used one.
